I have been on a mission to learn more about the U.S and its people. After working at my local library for almost two years, I have finally reached out to this community of Americans in Canada to broaden my knowledge base in the United States. As I am trying to find something to write here regarding teaching the native language to foreign students, I found that there is no clear direction on how to achieve it as everyone wants to take their path and see where it leads them while there are millions of native speakers in Canada. The biggest issue is we want a different way of thinking since all our education was taught by American teachers who did not teach us anything useful aside from math and English.
Even though native speakers try teaching foreign students using certain methods they like (my personal favorite is Google, and I will explain more about this in another article), it is very hard because they were not trained to do so. And when you ask me what methods to use and what topics to cover, I can only speak in general terms. How exactly does one teach foreign students to read Spanish, Arabic, or any other native languages? There is no systematic course taught in these languages; they are self-taught people without any training. However, you can start with a basic introduction to the topic like “Teaching English to Immigrants” and gradually develop your idea. It seems like many others have already done it. It took me five hours to complete the lesson which was a fun way of learning the history behind immigration to America.

At some point, the teacher starts asking questions if anyone wants to talk about specific topics and I find myself talking about the political system of the land (the government) and the history of slavery from the civil war up until the founding. In addition to that, we talked about the Constitution and everything else related to history which made me feel like I was studying a very real piece of research. What surprised me the most was that even though the teacher started abstractly explaining things, she was open to making suggestions and giving examples to prove her points. When she asked about my notes during class discussions or my bookmarks,
I tried to keep my answers concise. The best example for me was when I had to say that I knew nothing about the Constitution but the discussion allowed me to think about how I would define freedom and rights during my time abroad, especially after doing a project on the Civil Rights Movement and knowing a lot more about the Founding Fathers than before. With it being such a young country, I believe that people have to be more aware of the political history, especially how it affects immigrants. Being able to discuss how foreign students understand and see politics in action made me realize that I do not know much about history in general. So, I decided to continue learning more about the political context of certain countries through resources I’ve already got from libraries, online sources, and books.
!My journey has not been easy, like many others who are looking to get a better understanding of their new environment. But the past few weeks have left me with plenty of information to keep on track, such as the Supreme Court case Marshall vs Phelan, which made me consider whether it is possible to force people into classes without consent. On top of that, I learned about Thomas Jefferson and his legacy, the Constitution, Alexander Hamilton and his influence on the Canadian economy .why is the teaching of the native langues is important, the first colonies and the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte and his influence on European politics, etc.

For example, even if English is not your native language, you can still study it if you are interested in it, just make sure you have enough sources to back up your argument. So, if someone is going to teach you something, you need to give yourself permission to try and find a route to learning English because of your future job. I would recommend starting with choosing either a public school or private university depending on where you live. Depending on your financial background, you could also use those colleges that focus on science, math, engineering, computer science, business, and related fields.
Once you choose the course that you want to follow, start researching which universities have good programs for foreign students in various subjects and learn everything you can from a professor on campus. For instance, if you are worried about economics, you should go to Columbia University in New York or Loyola University in California. If you want to know more about international relations, try to visit Washington State University in Vancouver, British Columbia.

These universities will give you both historical exposure and practical experience of how it is being done inside the classrooms, giving you a strong foundation of information to improve your skills as soon as you graduate. Then start applying to jobs overseas and get selected for internships at companies around the world that require candidates to speak English and have at least one year of experience. Start building your English portfolio and networking. You may encounter many challenges along the way, just be ready to push yourself if you fall flat on your face. In conclusion, having confidence in yourself is key to success.

Keep improving how you think and learn more about history to improve your life and maybe one day become an ambassador or one of those who understands your culture. All sounds great but if you want to be an entrepreneur or lawyer or doctor, you should put yourself in those industries first and then worry about getting a master's degree.
